Shipping Restrictions

Why a state can say no

Alcohol is regulated separately in every state, and the rules cover who may sell it, who may carry it and whether it can be delivered to a private address at all. A bottle that is perfectly legal to buy in one state may be impossible to ship into another. This page explains how those rules show up at checkout on this site.

Common kinds of restriction

  • Spirits may not be delivered to a private address, while wine may.
  • A state may cap the number of bottles, or the total volume, in a single order.
  • A state may require the shipment to come from a licensed producer or retailer rather than any seller.
  • A state may require a specific permit before it accepts direct delivery.
  • A state may prohibit direct-to-consumer delivery entirely.

How we apply them

The delivery address is checked when it is entered. Where a destination is restricted, the checkout blocks the order and says why instead of accepting a payment that cannot be fulfilled. Where a state caps volume, the cap is applied to the cart. Where a permit is required, the order cannot complete until the operator record described below confirms that the permit is held.

Addresses we cannot use

An alcohol parcel needs an adult signature from someone aged 21 or over, so a PO box, a military post box, a parcel locker and a freight forwarder are all refused. Business addresses are accepted only where somebody can sign during normal working hours. Delivery is not made to a vehicle, a marina berth or any address the carrier cannot reach directly.

If your state is blocked

A blocked destination is not a judgement about you. The usual options are to send the bottle to an address in a state that accepts it, to choose a wine where the restriction applies only to spirits, or to ask the operator whether the required permit is in place. Do not ask a carrier to misdescribe a parcel; alcohol shipped without a declaration is neither insured nor lawful, and any loss falls on the sender.

Operator record

Registered business details and alcohol licence information are available on request from customer support. Until that record is published, treat the restriction list at checkout as the definitive answer.
